Two minutes of checks before you call — sometimes it's a 30-second fix. If not, we're across Perth's northern suburbs with same-day help.
Run a cold tap. If cold water is also off or weak, the problem is your water supply, not the hot water system — check for Water Corporation outages in your suburb before anything else.
Find your meter box and look for a tripped breaker labelled "hot water" or "HWS". If it's off, flip it back on once. If it trips again, stop — that's a fault (often a failed element) that needs a repair visit.
Look through the viewing window near the bottom of the tank. No small blue flame? Follow the lighting instructions printed on the unit. If the pilot won't stay lit, it's usually the thermocouple — a quick, inexpensive fix for a licensed gas fitter.
If you have gas continuous flow or storage, is another gas appliance (cooktop) working? If not, the issue is supply — check the meter valve is on, or for LPG homes, that the bottles aren't empty. Note that many newer northern estates have no gas at all — in that case your system will be electric and check #2 applies.
Water pooling around the base? Rumbling or popping sounds? Rusty water from hot taps? These point to a tank that's failing — see repair vs replace for what that means.
Then it's almost certainly a component fault — element, thermostat, gas valve or similar — and that's a quick job for a licensed plumber with the right parts. Most faults are fixed in a single visit, and where a system genuinely needs replacing, same-day installation is usually possible when you call in the morning.
Cold water supply, the switchboard breaker, the pilot light (gas storage), gas supply, and signs of leaking. If none solve it, it's a component fault needing a plumber.
It's urgent but not dangerous on its own. It becomes an emergency if the system is flooding, you smell gas, or it's making loud banging or hissing sounds — isolate the supply and call immediately.
